Art&Graft: Boomerang Global Rebrand

London motion design studio Art&Graft unleash a torrent of frenetic, isometric fun for Boomerang, Turner Broadcasting’s cartoon classic network with an eye to “re-align the branding across territories and create a complementary channel to Cartoon Network, whilst establishing its own identity & personality.”

Art&Graft CD, Mike Moloney: “We looked to create a wonderfully playful brand identity – a fun-filled playground of surprise and excitement.

“The use of blocks relates to its ‘bigger brother’ Cartoon Network, allowing the two brands to complement one another yet, with the use of rich color and isometric grid, also enables Boomerang to stand out clearly as its own destination. A place packed full of magic and wonder, where things are constantly revealed and appear in unexpected and entertaining ways.”

Art&Graft and “The Leafcutter” See What’s Out There

London design and motion studio Art&Graft take on the challenge of conveying a character’s emotions without the benefit of facial features in this 3D animated charmer for Costa Sunglasses thru agency McGarrah Jessee.

Mike Moloney, Creative Director at Art&Graft: “Tasked with bringing this timeless tale of adventure to life, we set out on our own journey too; creating a warm-hearted, cinematic film of the little Leafcutter.

“Throughout the process this always felt more like we were making a short film rather than a commercial; spending equal time on crafting the narrative storyline and rich, illustrative visual treatment as on the subtle 3D character animation of the finished film.

“Surely we all recognise a bit of ourselves in the Leafcutter’s quest for adventure. At times we follow the journey in microscopic detail, watching as huge raindrops crash all around, before viewing the same landscapes in glorious wide shots, utilizing the full range of scale that animation affords.”

London motion masters Art&Graft blend 3D character animation with a warm illustrative style for both an intimate and sweeping showcase of how sales of lottery tickets in the UK support the 1,300 athletes of Team GB and their quest for victory at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Art&Graft_Rio 2016 | STASH MAGAZINE

Art&Graft creative director Mike Moloney: “We wanted to create the epic, cinematic scenes synonymous with an Olympics launch, yet also introduce a warmth and charm that is sometimes missing when representing our heroic athletic superstars.

Art&Graft_Rio 2016 | STASH MAGAZINE

“Influenced by the paintings of Norman Wilkinson; his beautiful representations of British landscapes and sense of four seasons in one day, we sought to incorporate stunning lighting and a warm color palette into the design of the environments.

Art&Graft_Rio 2016 | STASH MAGAZINE

“We wanted the tickets to feel magical and mischievous as they spring to life in the morning sunlight then, once they join together in a flock, to feel graceful and elegant as they sweep through the air and transform our Team GB athletes.”

London design and animation studio Art&Graft infuse Indian children’s TV channel Pogo with primary colors and an irrepressible energy in their quest to establish “the ultimate Indian kids entertainment destination.”

Art&Graft: “With branding dating back 12 years, the channel had underlying design principles but needed a cleaner, more contemporary update.

“We built on the existing core elements of the logo and color palette and then developed an elegant, grid-like structure that could house characters and type in a sophisticated yet playful environment.”

Art&Graft “Lost Hope”

Exactly two years ago London design and animation studio Art&Graft released their wonderful in-house project “The Walk”, a calm, almost ambient ode to light and perambulation.

Their newest short, inspired by the films of John Carpenter, is the fourth in their animated Studio Film® series. “Lost Hope” retains the languid pacing of “The Walk” but trades sunlight for raven darkness, and discovery for night-shrouded mystery.

Art&Graft: “Lost Hope is a film about the dark places we travel to when feeling lost and alone.

“Distilling photographic techniques into an illustrative style, the film charts a cyclical journey of escaping the city and venturing into the wilderness. Plug in your headphones and head for the light.”

Art&Graft Imagines Life in Dubai at Tilal Al Ghaf

Weaving together 2D and 3D techniques, Art&Graft in London conjure an inviting and atmospheric illustrative style for Tilal Al Ghaf, a new community-driven property development in Dubai.

From Art&Graft: “Creating warmth whilst retaining a graphic, architectural style was a driving force for the visual direction. By combining traditional animation techniques with 3D elements we were able to strike upon this delicate balance to create a charming yet modern aesthetic.

Art&Graft Tilal Al Ghaf animation | STASH MAGAZINE

“From the outset we knew the design of the characters should be stylized and elegant, to highlight the beauty of the Hikayat Al Ghaf area. Adding overlapping shapes and curves to the designs helped create a visual link with the stylized forms of their surroundings.

“It was important for our central characters to feel aspirational yet retain a charm and approachability to resonate with the viewer. Careful attention was made towards the intricate design details to help define this, such as the print of a shirt or the shape of their glasses.”

Art&Graft Sign With Final Frontier in Asia

$

From the release:

Final Frontier has announced the addition of Art&Graft to its now 16-strong roster in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Australia.

Art&Graft specializes in character-driven 2D and 3D narrative animation, character design and channel rebrands, and has also created a significant body of original shorts.

Founded in 2010 by Mike Moloney, the London-based studio currently comprises 12 full-time staff bolstered by freelance talent. Recent clients have included Google, Amazon, Virgin Media, Wieden + Kennedy, Asics, Soho House, and Turner. Frequent flyers may know the studio’s lauded Virgin Atlantic pre-flight safety film.

Describing the studio’s work, Moloney says, “We’re best known for our character-driven films, crafting a narrative and directing the action through the design and personality of our characters. We focus a lot of effort into crafting each frame and the nuances within them. We hope viewers will continue to spot new details each time they watch them.”

Art&Graft have recently begun to expand their work into more tech-driven areas, including designing characters for Google augmented reality apps, and a self-initiated ‘future safari’ motion capture project.

On joining Final Frontier, Moloney says, “The market in Asia feels exciting and full of opportunity. It is uncharted territory with so much potential. Final Frontier is going for it, and it felt right to get involved. The roster feels very complimentary to the work we do at Art&Graft.”

Final Frontier executive producer Gustavo Karam says, “We’ve been huge admirers of Art&Graft’s work for years. They are among the global vanguard in character design and animation, and we’re super excited to see what emerges when their unique quality reacts with creativity in Asia.”

Art&Graft is the latest addition to Final Frontier’s growing roster in Asia, which already includes international animation studios and directors across the technique spectrum, including Tendril, Le Cube, Los York, Wonderlust and CanCan Club.

In a rare example of a Chinese broadcaster working with international creatives on a rebrand, London’s Art&Graft launch a complete make-over for the kids’ channel of China’s national broadcaster CCTV thru Shanghai prodco Final Frontier.

Executive Producer Gustavo Karam at Final Frontier: “The brief called for a full visual rebrand for the channel including logo design and animation, idents, and mixed media live-action and animated promos.

“Art&Graft devised a three-tier brand system to appeal to the channels wide demographic. The package also includes a family of original brand characters. In total, the studio delivered over 60 final assets in the package.

“China Central Television (CCTV) is China’s national broadcaster and one of the most-watched television networks in the world, with more than 1.3 billion viewers per year. CCTV Kids is the broadcaster’s only dedicated children’s channel and features original IP, licensed Chinese programming and a block of international shows.”

London design and motion force Art&Graft (who recently graced the cover of Stash 144 with their Boing Channel rebrand) just released an ambitious and energized retrospective of their first decade in the business.

Mike Moloney, founder & ECD at Art&Graft: “2020 afforded us the opportunity to reflect on the past decade – all the learnings and opportunities to adapt to a changing industry each project has provided in order to get us to where we are now.

“We’ve poured it all into a visual manifesto as a kind of public commitment to our values and process (for our team, our clients, and everyone we work with) and as a way of setting our intentions for the future while acknowledging the past.

“Starting and building a creative agency is no easy task yet it’s been hugely fulfilling 10 years as we’ve continued to grow and adapt to the shifts and changes in our industry.

“The talented Art&Graft team is at the core of everything we do and this film reflects the shared values that play such an important part of our creative ethos. I’m truly excited to see all the things we’ll achieve together over the next 10 years.”
